On Day 2, India were struggling at 51 for 3 and New Zealand's short ball barrage tested both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinjya Rahane thoroughly. The latter was dropped by de Grandhomme in the 25th over trying to pull when he was on 2. Rahane took several blows to the helmet and, in the end, fell to a poor stroke. The right-hander walked across and pulled a back of length ball from Wagner back onto his stumps to help the hosts just about edge ahead. It just went from bad to worse for India as Trent Boult got one to sneak past Pujara's defence even before the lead could cross 100.
